Plants that Need Ericaceous Soil

Ericaceous soil is used for plants that do not grow well in limey soil. They will not thrive if they are planted in soil that is alkaline and has too high a pH level. These are some of the plants that will grow well in ericaceous soil:

  • Azaleas. There are two type, deciduous azaleas and evergreen azaleas. Both types are small shrubs and grow well in a sheltered part of the garden with some shade.
  • Blueberries. You can add a splash of colour to your garden by growing blueberries. Water them carefully with rainwater, as tap water is too alkaline.
  • Camellias. Grow these flowers in a shady spot and make sure the soil is well drained. Use organic matter to help with their growth.

Remember that if you are growing lime hating plants, the easiest thing to do is grow them in pots and containers so you can control the soil.
